聖經考古學：十字架上的字母“INRI”是什麼意思？

“INRI”這幾個字母，是本丟彼拉多在耶穌基督十字架上邊寫的拉丁罪狀的每一個字的起首字母（約翰福音十九章19節）。拉丁文是羅馬帝國的官方語言。
這些字是“Iesvs Nazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorvm”， 拉丁文的“I”是英文的“J”，其“V”是“U”（即Jesus Nazarenus Rex Judaeorum）。英文翻譯是“Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”（猶太人的王，拿撒勒人耶穌）。
早期教會採用這個罪狀上每個字的第一個字母作為一個符號﹕“INRI”。幾個世紀以來，“INRI”已經出現在許多有關十字架上的畫作中。
彼拉多又﹝用牌子﹞寫了一個名號，安在十字架上。寫的是猶太人的王，拿撒勒人耶穌。當時有許多猶太人念了這罪名，因為耶穌被釘十字架的地方，與城相近，並且是用希伯來，羅馬，希利尼，三樣文字寫的。猶太人的祭司長，就對彼拉多說，「不要寫“猶太人的王”。要寫祂自己說“我是猶太人的王”」。彼拉多說，「我所寫的，我已經寫上了。」（約十九19-22）
