上圖為羅馬軍隊在公元一世紀常用的三種十字架。每個都有一個牌子，寫著受刑者的死罪，和一個座位似的凸出部分，不是為了受刑者的舒服而設計，而是為了延長他們的痛苦。釘子和繩索將受刑者的雙腿和手臂固定在位。
左邊的十字架被稱為“高T”（high tau）十字架，因為它的形狀像希臘字母 tau（“T”）大寫。中間的十字架被稱為“低t”（low tau）十字架，形如小寫的 tau（“t”）。二者的中央柱一般都是長期插在地上，而橫樑則是受刑人帶到現場的。右邊的十字架是一棵樹，仍在地上，（無論是已死或仍活），它的樹枝被用作十字架的橫梁。耶穌很可能是被釘在“低t”型十字架上。
